An independent member of the University of London, City University is globally renowned and one of the capitals leading academic schools.
City, University of London is a global higher education institution committed to academic excellence, with a focus on business and the professions at an enviable central London location.
As part of an initiative to improve work-space utilisation, City University enlisted digital signage specialists, onemedia to introduce an intelligent room availability system composed of room signs, along with room summary screens displaying availability status for meeting rooms, study rooms and other bookable resources which are accessible to both staff and students anytime.
Facilitated by the full-service AV Integrator ‘Reflex’, onemedia developed a bespoke user interface solution upon the reliable ONELAN CMS platform for room sign and summary management. The solution has been developed to integrate directly into the existing Scientia resource management system.
The room signs have been installed outside key meeting rooms and lecture suites using ONELAN integrated player displays. They are configured
to display live availability status for each room and are styled inline with the universities colour coding system for differing departments.
In addition, this project also saw the install of larger screens, powered by ONELAN NTBs throughout campus. These depict the full booking status and availability for multiple rooms showing both current and future bookings.
City University of London required a room availability solution which would replace the existing, expensive and complicated system they currently had in place. The ONELAN platform was already being used for digital signage communications in other departments so, by developing on the same platform for the room booking, it meant that all digital communications have been consolidated and are now managed through a single CMS, simplifying the on-site management of content by the end user. The new system is much less demanding on the network and easier for non-technical users to configure, especially when it comes to upscaling the system for additional rooms.
The combination of summary screens displaying the availability status of each individual room, along with integrated displays situated outside of each room, maximises the effective use of space across the entire campus in real time, allowing anyone and everyone to recognise vacancy opportunities at a glance.
City University provided onemedia a simple yet professional custom designs for both room signs and summary screens which adhere to the universities brand guidelines. Each summary screen is coordinated in line with their existing physical signage and departmental colour coding system. Live updates are also integrated, delivering an ergonomic and cohesive navigation experience.
This unique system has improved the efficiency of City University of London by removing the risk of human error and maximising the time of both staff and students. Expensive licence costs are eradicated whilst the ability to forward plan has resulted in effective workspace utilisation.
